Last chance to apply for the London Jazz Festival's jazz journalism scheme, The Write Stuff. If you're interested in getting into jazz journalism, and would like to learn tips from the experts, then this is the scheme for you. Run in partnership with Jazzwise magazine, the scheme gives aspiring journalists the chance to improve writing skills and develop an understanding of jazz criticism in the company of experienced professionals. There are only 8 places available.

London Jazz Festival: preparations in full swing

The London Jazz Festival may seem a long time away, what with it only being the beginning of August, but preparations for November's festivities are already in full swing. Over the past couple of weeks we've put a raft of shows on sale, giving you a taste of what's to come in what looks to be the largest Festival yet. From the jazz heavyweights such as Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock, to the new generation of trailblazing artists, such as Robert Glasper and Christian Scott, there's something to whet every jazz appetite.

There's been a real buzz around these first announcements in the press, and we've seen some great features on some of the Festival's artists.

Radio 3 receives Sony Award for coverage of the London Jazz Festival!

The winners of the Sony Radio Academy Awards 2010 were announced on Monday. All in the Serious office were eagerly awaiting the results. We're thrilled to announce that the 2009 London Jazz Festival in association with BBC Radio 3 won the bronze award for the Best Live Event Coverage. Congratulations go to BBC Radio 3, BBC Scotland, BBC Wales, Unique the production company & Somethin' Else for BBC Radio 3!

London Jazz Festival nominated for Sony Award!

Great news for the London Jazz Festival!

The 2009 London Jazz Festival in assocation with BBC Radio 3 has been nominated for the "Best Live Event Coverage" in this year's Sony Radio Academy Awards. Credit for the nomination goes to BBC Radio 3, BBC Scotland, BBC Wales, Unique Production Co & Somethin' Else for BBC Radio 3.

This year the London Jazz Festival in association with BBC Radio 3 raised its game once again, re-affirming its place as a vital part of the UK’s cultural calendar. For ten days the Festival welcomed world-class artists to London’s concert halls and clubs, presenting international stars and fresh new talent from the UK’s own burgeoning scene. Record audiences visited more venues than ever before, showcasing jazz right across the city. An unprecedented number of sold out shows and a multitude of 4 and 5 star reviews, happy artists and happy audiences made for a hugely successful 2009 Festival.

Explore the links between jazz and hip hop

Calling all musicians, rappers, beatboxers, lyricists or anyone who just loves music, aged between 10 and 16 years. Don't miss out on the chance to work with US rapper and beat boxer Napoleon Maddox.

Some of Napoleon’s thoughts on music:

“My view of music is that it is an expression, half technical and half social. It is important to understand and develop the skill of making sound and it is equally important to have something to express (and an audience with which to share it). The ideal situation is that the social helps to develop the technical and vice versa through interaction and documentation - whether the document is oral or written. My favourite pieces of music communicate things that are universal in a unique way - even if the concept or feeling once seemed obscure.

My main musical focus is in hip hop. Hip hop is sometimes not treated as music by performers and sometimes is not acknowledged as music by critics. Contrary to what many may believe, hip hop involves a lot of technique. However, many of the skills developed around the genre do not come from conventional music practices.

The best hip hop connects a wide array of musical and cultural experiences. There are a million ways to express yourself within hip hop. This provides the freedom to connect with anyone whose feelings you understand, no matter the culture."

London Jazz Festival Launch

The Festival launched with a bang last week at the official launch party. The full Festival programme was announced in the fantastic setting of The Forge, the new live music venue in Camden.
